MicroStrategy Aids with Improvements at Frontline

Frontline, the trade marketing and distribution company, owned by EMAP plc, Haymarket Publishing Ltd and BBC Worldwide, has chosen MicroStrategy to supply analysis tools at the front end of its data warehousing project, Genesis.

In a sector where market knowledge is critical, MicroStrategy AgentT will be able to provide Frontline with in-depth analysis of sales and supply data for the 150 publications circulated to the 55,000 retailers in the UK which stock magazines managed by Frontline.

"Our primary objective is to improve the efficiency and focus and our distribution across the UK," said Geoff Love, Marketing Services Manager. "For the first time we will have a real understanding of where our products sell, enabling better strategic planning and more efficient distribution management."

MicroStrategy was chosen as part of Genesis to overcome five key business issues:

Retail Trading Strategy
To allow a better understanding of retail market dynamics and enable Frontline to take action to support its retail strategy.

Promotional Performance
To analyse the effects of marketing and promotional campaigns on the performance of each retail outlet.

Category Management
To better understanding of the business of individual retailers, with a view to improving the supply chain with each retailer.

Circulation Management

To analyse the performance of specific magazines at an individual retail level and improve circulation management expertise and knowledge.

Future Potential
To develop the data warehouse in a focused manner in order to identify business benefits and performance at each stage. This will include the phased introduction of different types of information into the data warehouse.

MicroStrategy was recommended by systems integration Amdahl and after close analysis it proved to be the vendor most suited to their requirements.

Phase One is focused on providing analysed information to a number of power users who will act as service providers to key departments such as retail and trade marketing departments. In future phases, Frontline will develop the use of MicroStrategy tools to provide logistics, finance and field sales force data analysis. MicroStrategy will eventually enable over 150 employees to access this information from all areas of the business.

"The Frontline project is a great example of how MicroStrategy's decision support systems can be used across the enterprise," says Bob Skeens, UK Managing Director of MicroStrategy. "Departments looking after the logistics of delivery, for example will be able to conduct analysis via MicroStrategy Agent, as will team heads in charge of Frontline's key retail accounts such as Tesco, W.H.Smith and others. MicroStrategy data warehousing technology will eventually be used to reap efficiencies right across the organisation."
